Description

AIRCRAFT INSPECTORATE COURSE AT ROYAL AIRCRAFT ESTABLISHMENT COURSE DIARY of what happened every day on the Course 1946. In April 1946 the ROYAL AIRCRAFT ESTABLISHMENT at Farnborough ran a Course for A.I.D. (Aircraft Establishment Department) selected Members. On this course was Mr H. Luttman, this is the exercise book where he had taken down notes at the course in pencil. The Course ran from 23rd April to 20th July and was arranged "to enable the participants to acquire knowledge of the experimental , development and testing work in progress at R.A.E. and so bring their knowledge up to date...". Included in this lot are: 1) Letter about Course from A.I.D. to H Luttman Esq about the Course, dated 2nd April 1946 includes names of the other members on the Course. 165mmx205mm. Single sheet double sided. Some marks. 2) DIARY with his handwritten notes in pencil, containing his notes day by day about what they were learning and what happened. Interesting reading, for example: 26th April 'Today was spent almost entirely in watching the initial tests of the Brabazon undercarriage. Although the 1/2 scale model is not like the final design...', 12 June 'In the afternoon there was a demonstration of flying the highlight of which was a show by the Vampire. This ended unfortunately by dropping in a high-speed zoom over the hangars. He landed successfully, the leg collapsing after some speed had been lost, the aircraft then turned into a very wet patch on the side of the runway'. I haven't read most of it so most probably more interesting things. In a Public Service Exercise Book. 180mmx230mm. 52 pages written on. Within the book are some loose paperwork: a) AIR MINISTRY FIRE SERVICES PROGRAMME OF DEMONSTRATION. 200mmx330mm. Single sheet, one sided. b) REPRINT of an advert by FAIREY AVIATION about a Folding and Bending Machine.220mmx280mm. Damaged on left hand edge 20mmx15mm piece missing from margin. Single sheet, one sided. c) REPRINT of an article from AIRCRAFT PRODUCTION September 1944 entitled 'Section Forming and Bending'. 220mmx295mm. Single sheet double sided. d) Carbon copy of REPORT OF VISIT TO R.A.E. by S.C. Wybrow. Date of Visit 19-11-45 to 16-2-46 (that was the first course). 170mmx240mm. 6 pages. Tear to spine, brown spotting to covers otherwise very good condition. 3) FOUR PHOTOGRAPHS relating to the TEARING of various materials.300mmx190mm. PLYWOOD TEARING, FABRIC TEARING, SKIN TEARING (2 each different), RAE stamps on back. Tears to edges. MR LUTTMAN was an AID inspector during the war including in the USA and was at Vought-Sikorsky Aircraft.
